I've had this idea in my head that it would be cool to take a train across the United States. There are large parts of the country that I've never seen and cannot conceive of an excuse to go see them short of travelling across them by rail. Add to this the romance and little-kid appeal of train travel, and you can see why it would be appealing.
Mo takes the train down to the Bay Area fairly regularly and got a flyer showing that we could take the train all the way north into Canada. This sounded great! We'd have our own berth, be able to sleep on the train and see the west coast. Then we found out that the train ends in Seattle and that the rest is all bus travel.
Mo has, for several years, had a desire to go to Seattle. Well, actually, Mo has this desire to go pretty much anywhere. So, for us, this worked out great. We could bum around in Seattle for a few days and then head up to Vancouver at our leisure.
