The Sound of My Own Voice: Experiments in artsy-fartsy design
It's the image, damnit!
What is it about these somewhat goofy-length pants that makes 'em so damned attractive? I mean, really--they're right in the middle of capri and normal old pants, but something about them makes them stand out. Maybe its the fact that I've yet to see anybody wearing them that has made them look bad: it's a hard design to abuse and the fabrics used allow for a lot of tolerance.

But more, I think it's the fact that they speak of summertime and of a certain innocence. Walking along a sandy beach around sunset. The smell of girls in Hawaiian Tropic and lazy days in the sun. The cool breeze that gently kisses sunburnt flesh as you retreat to the shade. They are of summer and all the good things that it brings. Ice cream cones and swimming pools and long days without school. Family vacations. The slower pace of life. Trips to the river. That blast of cool air when you walk into a building, and the wall of hot when you go back outside. Iced tea, lemonade, a first crush. Girls in bathing suits and all the rest.

I'm glad they're back.

New for 2002: Tragically, pedal pushers and clam diggers went out for the most part in 2001. One still spots them now and again on Euro-types and the occasional "it was in my wardrobe" types. Boise, ID still clings to them but also has some sort of weird long denim skirt thing that passes for sexy there. Fashion has changed, the girls still look cute.

What I liked about Clam Diggaz were the fact that every girl looked good in 'em. There was not a single person I ever saw them on and went "you know, the clam diggers just don't work..." Skinny girls, girls with big butts, whatever. Very democratic. Very American.
